Duramax Engine Generations by Code and Model Year

Identify Duramax engine codes and changeover years: LB7 through L5P, LM2 versus LZ0, Colorado’s LWN, and the announced 2027 8.3L diesel.
For Chevrolet Silverado HD pickups, the 6.6L Duramax sequence is LB7 → LLY → LBZ → LMM → LML → L5P. Use those engine codes—not just the truck’s model year—when comparing trucks or ordering parts, especially around the 2004, 2006 and 2007 changeovers.
Duramax also covers separate engine families: the 3.0L LM2 and LZ0 inline-six in light-duty trucks and SUVs, and the 2.8L LWN four-cylinder in Colorado. They are not smaller versions of the HD V8. Chevrolet’s 2026 diesel lineup distinguishes its current 3.0L and 6.6L applications; GM has also announced a separate 8.3L Duramax for 2027 HD pickups.
6.6L Duramax generations: Silverado HD pickups
These are U.S. pickup applications. Vans and medium-duty trucks can have different codes, ratings and production dates. The year ranges follow the Duramax application listings, with the early-2006 exception explained below.
| Engine code | Silverado HD model years | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| LB7 | 2001–early 2004 | Original common-rail 6.6L; fixed-geometry turbo and injectors beneath the valve covers |
| LLY | Mid-2004–2005; revised version in early 2006 | Variable-geometry turbo and easier injector access; 2006 needs separate identification |
| LBZ | 2006–2007 Classic | Stronger engine structure and revised controls; paired with an Allison six-speed automatic |
| LMM | New-body 2007–2010 | Added a diesel particulate filter (DPF) |
| LML | 2011–2016 | Added selective catalytic reduction (SCR) using diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) |
| L5P | 2017–2026 | Later 6.6L generation; parts listings distinguish 2017–2019, 2020–2023 and 2024-on applications |
The early-engine changes are documented in MotorTrend’s Duramax history and an archived GM release for the 2006 engines. Chevrolet rates the 2026 6.6L Duramax at 470 hp and 975 lb-ft, paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic. Those are current factory engine ratings, not ratings for every L5P model year or rear-wheel output. 2026 diesel specifications
The three model-year traps
- 2004: “2004.5” is parts-catalog shorthand for the midyear switch from LB7 to LLY—not a separate model year. Duramax history
- 2006: Not every diesel HD is an LBZ. GM initially supplied a revised 310-hp LLY with the Allison six-speed, then introduced the 360-hp, 650-lb-ft LBZ during the same model year. The GM announcement specifies that transition. For these trucks, the eighth VIN character is 2 for LLY or D for LBZ. 2006 identification details
- 2007: A Silverado HD Classic with the LBZ and a new-body HD with the LMM belong to different engine applications. Parts catalogs commonly label the latter “2007.5.” Application-year breakdown
What changes for 2027?
As of October 6, 2026, GM has announced an 8.3L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 rated at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft, paired with an Allison 10-speed for the 2027 Silverado HD. GM describes it as a clean-sheet engine architecture, with launch planned during 2026. Treat it as a separate engine family rather than extending the L5P row into 2027. GM’s September 24 announcement
3.0L Duramax: LM2 versus LZ0
The 3.0L generation change happened at different times in pickups and SUVs.
| Engine code | Silverado 1500 application | Tahoe and Suburban changeover | Factory output |
|---|---|---|---|
| LM2 | 2020–2022 | Previous-generation diesel, used through 2024 | 277 hp / 460 lb-ft |
| LZ0 | 2023–2026 | New-generation diesel for 2025–2026 | 305 hp / 495 lb-ft |
The application listings identify the pickup changeover. GM’s February 2025 service bulletin lists LM2 for 2024 Tahoe/Suburban and LZ0 for 2025, while Chevrolet’s 2025 SUV announcement gives both generations’ output. The 2026 specifications retain the 305-hp, 495-lb-ft rating.
A 2024 diesel Silverado 1500 has the LZ0, while a 2024 diesel Tahoe or Suburban has the LM2. Chevrolet’s second-generation SUV diesel brought steel pistons, higher-flow injectors, a retuned turbo compressor and cooling revisions. Chevrolet announced it for availability after the initial 2025 SUV launch. 2025 SUV announcement
Colorado’s 2.8L Duramax LWN
U.S. Colorado diesels use the LWN 2.8L turbocharged inline-four for 2016–2022, a separate parts and maintenance application from both the 3.0L and 6.6L engines. The application-year listing gives that range, and GM’s 2022 Colorado/Canyon body-builder manual identifies LWN as the 2.8L diesel four-cylinder.
Confirm the engine before buying or servicing
RPO means Regular Production Option; LBZ, L5P and LZ0 are examples of engine RPO codes. Check the vehicle’s build information or Service Parts Identification label. Where fitted, the certification-label QR code can reveal the three-character RPO list; GM documents that arrangement in its Colorado/Canyon body-builder manual.
If the label is missing, ask a Chevrolet dealer to confirm the factory engine from the full VIN. On an engine-swapped truck, also identify the installed engine—the factory build record alone cannot establish what is there now.
Once identified, use the matching 6.6L Duramax oil-capacity guide and factory maintenance guidance. For towing, the engine code is only the starting point: verify the exact truck’s configuration, payload and trailering rating before selecting a trailer.
