For a routine oil-and-filter change, 6.6L Duramax pickups generally take 10.0 US quarts (9.5 liters). That is the service-fill amount—not a dry-engine capacity—and the exact model-year Duramax supplement and dipstick remain the final checks.

Engine changes did not always align neatly with calendar years. Identify the engine from the truck’s VIN/build information and manual rather than relying only on its registration year. The 2.8L and 3.0L Duramax engines are different engine families and do not use this table.
Service fill is not dry fill
The 10-quart figure is for a normal drain-and-refill with a replacement filter. Some oil remains in the engine after an ordinary drain, so this number should not be treated as the total capacity of a completely empty lubrication system.
A new, rebuilt or otherwise dry engine requires the applicable GM service procedure for filling and priming. Replaced components and retained oil affect how much must be added. Do not use the routine 10-quart service fill as a dry-fill target.
GM’s 2025 6.6L Duramax supplement lists 9.5 L (10.0 qt) with the filter, describes all capacities as approximate and instructs the owner to recheck the level after filling (2025 GM 6.6L Duramax Diesel Engine Supplement).
How to verify the level after an oil change
- Install the correct replacement filter and drain plug or seal as required.
- Add slightly less than 10 quarts initially.
- Start the engine briefly and check the filter and drain plug for leaks.
- Shut the engine off and allow the oil to drain back into the pan.
- With the truck on level ground, check the dipstick and add oil gradually to the specified range.
- Recheck for leaks, then reset the oil-life monitor.
Do not keep adding oil merely because the first dipstick reading appears low. If the reading still disagrees materially with the expected 10-quart service fill after the proper wait and checking procedure, confirm the engine, filter, drain plug and model-year instructions before proceeding.
The truck’s main owner’s manual may send diesel owners to a separate Duramax supplement; the 2022 Silverado HD manual does exactly that (2022 Silverado 2500HD/3500HD Owner’s Manual).
