2015 Chevy Silverado Oil Capacity: 1500 and HD Engines

Check 2015 Silverado oil capacity with filter by engine, oil viscosity, and the 8-versus-8.5-quart discrepancy for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s.
The 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 has an 8-US-quart (approximately 7.6-liter) oil-and-filter-change capacity in AMSOIL’s model-year-specific service lookup. Chevrolet specifies SAE 0W-20 dexos1-approved oil. The printed owner’s manual lists a different capacity for this engine—see the 8-versus-8.5-quart note below before filling.
Oil capacity with a new filter
These are oil-and-filter-change quantities—not dry-engine fills or amounts to add when topping off. All quarts below are US quarts; liter equivalents are approximate.
| 2015 Silverado model | Engine | Capacity with filter | Oil viscosity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1500 | 4.3L V6 | 6 qt / 5.7 L | SAE 5W-30 |
| 1500 | 5.3L V8 | 8 qt / 7.6 L* | SAE 0W-20 |
| 1500 | 6.2L V8 | 8 qt / 7.6 L* | SAE 0W-20 |
| 2500HD / 3500HD | 6.0L gasoline V8 | 6 qt / 5.7 L | SAE 5W-30 |
| 2500HD / 3500HD | 6.6L Duramax diesel V8 | 10 qt / 9.5 L | SAE 15W-40; SAE 5W-40 below 0°F |
The 8-quart figures are AMSOIL service listings; Chevrolet’s printed manual lists 8.5 quarts for these two engines.
Sources: Chevrolet’s 2015 Silverado owner’s manual, pages 10-13 and 12-2–12-3, supports the gasoline viscosities and 4.3L/6.0L capacities. AMSOIL lists 8 quarts with a filter for the 5.3L and 6.2L. GM’s 2015 Duramax supplement lists the 10-quart capacity and diesel viscosities.
For the gasoline engines, Chevrolet requires the dexos1 certification mark, not just the correct viscosity. It also permits SAE 0W-30 for the 4.3L and 6.0L engines below −20°F (−29°C). Gasoline oil requirements, page 10-13.
For the diesel, the original supplement specifies API CJ-4; API confirms that CK-4 oils can also lubricate engines calling for CJ-4. Choose the appropriate diesel viscosity; FA-4 is not a backward-compatible substitute.
5.3L and 6.2L: 8 quarts versus 8.5 quarts
The printed 2015 owner’s manual capacity table lists 8.5 quarts (8.0 liters) of engine oil with a filter for both V8s. That differs from AMSOIL’s 8-quart listings; the cited sources do not explain the discrepancy.
For an oil-and-filter change, treat 8 quarts as a starting service-fill reference and verify the dipstick level, rather than automatically adding another half-quart to match the printed table. Chevrolet describes its capacities as approximate and instructs owners to recheck the level after filling. Add only what is needed to bring the oil into the proper operating range.
Confirm the engine and check the level
For a factory gasoline engine, the eighth VIN character helps identify the correct row: H or P = 4.3L, C = 5.3L, G = 6.0L, and J = 6.2L, according to the manual’s engine-code table, page 12-4.
For the gasoline engines, Chevrolet’s dipstick procedure is:
- Park on level ground.
- If the engine has been running, shut it off and wait several minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully reinsert it, then remove it again with the tip down to read the level. Use a towel or glove if the handle is hot.
Keep the oil within the acceptable operating range. Do not continue adding oil just to reach a published quantity if the dipstick already shows full. If it reads above the range, remove the excess or have a service professional remove it. Chevrolet warns that levels above or below the range can harm the engine.
