2014 Silverado 5.3 Takes 8 Quarts With a Filter Change

The 2014 Silverado 1500 5.3L takes 8 US quarts with a filter change. Check 0W-20 requirements and why the original manual lists 8.5 quarts.
The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L L83 V8 takes 8 US quarts (about 7.6 liters) of engine oil with a filter change. GM’s service bulletin PIP5231A confirms this updated fill specification for the exact model and engine. Use SAE 0W-20 oil with dexos1 approval, as specified in Chevrolet’s owner’s manual. GM capacity bulletin; 2014 Silverado owner’s manual, page 10-12.

If you need to confirm the engine, Chevrolet’s manual identifies the L83 by C in the eighth position of the VIN. The service-parts identification label inside the glove box lists the truck’s production options. These specifications are for the factory L83—not a swapped engine or another Silverado engine. Owner’s manual, pages 12-1 and 12-4.
Why does the manual say 8.5 quarts?
The original 2014 manual’s capacity table lists 8.5 quarts (8.0 liters) for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. However, GM’s October 2014 PIP5231A bulletin says Service Information was updated to 8 quarts with the filter for the listed L83 and L86 applications, including the 2014 Silverado 1500. For an oil-and-filter change, use that updated specification—not the older 8.5-quart table. Original capacity table, page 12-2; GM’s correction.
If you already added 8.5 quarts, the bulletin says the typical half-quart overfill indicated on the dipstick in the condition it describes does not require draining and will not damage the engine or affect operation. That guidance does not cover a larger overfill. GM overfill guidance.
Check the level after refilling
Eight quarts is the service-fill quantity, not an amount to add to an engine that already contains oil. After the oil-and-filter change, verify the level:
- Park on level ground.
- If the engine has been running, shut it off and wait several minutes for oil to drain back into the pan.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully reinsert it, then remove it again, keeping the tip down, to read the level. Use a towel or glove if the handle is hot.
PIP5231A identifies the upper dimple as “full” and the lowest bottom dimple as “add.” Do not keep pouring oil merely to reach a published quantity if the dipstick already reads full. Chevrolet’s checking procedure, page 10-11; GM dipstick guidance.
