2020 Silverado 5.3 Oil Capacity: 8 Quarts With Filter

The 2020 Silverado 1500 5.3L takes 8 US quarts with a filter change. Check L82/L84 fitment, 0W-20 dexos1 oil and dipstick timing.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 takes 8 US quarts (7.6 liters) of engine oil with a filter change. That capacity applies to both 5.3L engine codes, L82 and L84, in GM’s U.S. and Canada oil-capacity chart.
Use SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil approved to the dexos1 specification; look for the dexos1 approved logo on the container. The capacity is an approximate service-fill amount—not an instruction to add eight quarts when topping off a partially full engine. 2020 Silverado owner’s manual, Engine Oil and Capacities and Specifications.
Which 5.3L engine do you have?
Both factory 5.3L versions use the same oil quantity and viscosity:
| 2020 Silverado 1500 engine | Eighth VIN character | Oil capacity with filter | Oil viscosity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3L V8, L82 | F | 8 US qt / 7.6 L | SAE 0W-20 |
| 5.3L V8, L84 | D | 8 US qt / 7.6 L | SAE 0W-20 |
Capacities and viscosity come from GM TechLink’s model-year chart; VIN identifiers come from the owner’s manual’s Engine Specifications table.
For shopping, eight one-quart bottles cover the listed fill. Two five-quart jugs provide 10 quarts, so do not pour in both jugs: use the listed capacity and verify the final level with the dipstick. For other engine and configuration details, see our 2020 Silverado 1500 reference guide.
Check the dipstick before adding more
Chevrolet specifies the following procedure for an accurate oil-level reading:
- Park on level ground and switch the engine off. Ideally, wait at least two hours; checking a cold engine before starting improves accuracy.
- If you cannot wait two hours, allow at least 15 minutes for a warm engine or 30 minutes for an engine that is not warm.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully reinsert it, then withdraw it again with the tip down to read the level.
- Keep the oil within the dipstick’s cross-hatched operating range. Do not add more simply because an immediate post-shutdown reading looks low.
These timings and the operating-range guidance are from the 2020 Silverado owner’s manual, Checking Engine Oil. Chevrolet warns that overfilling can damage the engine; excess oil above the operating range should be removed.
After completing the oil change, reset the engine oil-life monitor to 100%. The manual says it does not reset itself and requires oil and filter replacement at least once a year, even if the monitor has not called for service. Owner’s manual, Engine Oil Life System.
