2018 Silverado 5.3L Oil Capacity and Oil Type

The 2018 Silverado 1500 5.3L takes 8 US quarts with a filter change. Check the 0W-20 dexos1 requirement and the correct dipstick procedure.
The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with the 5.3L V8 takes 8.0 US quarts (7.6 liters) of engine oil with a filter change. Chevrolet specifies SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic oil meeting the dexos1 specification. These requirements appear in the 2018 Silverado owner’s manual, pages 345 and 457.
Capacity by 5.3L engine version

| 2018 Silverado 1500 engine | Engine RPO | Oil capacity with filter | Viscosity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3L V8 | L83 | 8.0 US qt / 7.6 L | SAE 0W-20 |

The eight-quart figure already includes the filter—do not add extra oil for it. It is an approximate oil-and-filter service capacity, not the amount to add when topping up an engine that already contains oil.
For shopping, eight one-quart bottles cover the listed fill. Two five-quart jugs also work, but do not pour in all ten quarts. Look for the dexos1 approved logo, not just “0W-20” on the label.
Check the dipstick after filling
Chevrolet calls the capacities approximate and instructs owners to recheck the level after filling. Follow the manual’s engine-oil checking procedure, pages 344–345:
- Park on level ground and switch the engine off.
- For the most accurate reading, wait at least two hours; checking a cold engine before starting improves accuracy. If you cannot wait, allow at least 15 minutes for a warm engine or 30 minutes for an engine that is not warm.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinstall it fully, then remove it again with the tip down to read the level.
- Keep the oil within the dipstick’s cross-hatched operating range. Do not add more simply to reach a nominal quantity if the level is already correct. Reinstall the dipstick fully when finished.
If the level is above the operating range, drain the excess oil or limit driving and have a service professional remove it. Chevrolet warns that overfilling can damage the engine.
After the oil change, reset the oil-life monitor. The manual, pages 346–347, also requires changing the engine oil and filter at least once a year, even if the monitor has not called for service.
