Chevy Suburban Cargo Space: Current Specs and Used-Year Comparison

A 2026 Chevrolet Suburban has 41.5 cu. ft. behind the third row, 93.8 cu. ft. behind the second row and 144.5 cu. ft. behind the first row with both rear rows folded. Chevrolet’s official 2026 page confirms the 144.5-cu.-ft. maximum, while a Chevrolet dealer’s model guide supplies the three-position breakdown. These years are checkpoints, not ranges. Do not apply one row automatically to every intervening model year. Chevrolet changed the body, cargo floor and rear-seat design across generations, and published volume can vary slightly even where the underlying body is similar.

What changed for 2021?

Compared with the 2020 Suburban, the redesigned 2021 model added:

• 2.2 cu. ft. behind the third row
• 17.1 cu. ft. behind the second row
• 23.0 cu. ft. of maximum cargo room

The 2021 Chevrolet catalog says the second row folds flat and close to the floor. Manual second-row seats can also slide fore and aft by as much as 5.5 inches, letting occupants trade some second-row legroom for cargo room without folding the seat.

Chevrolet’s published maximum changed slightly from 144.7 cu. ft. for 2021 to 144.5 cu. ft. for 2026 and 2027. Use the specification for the exact model year rather than assuming every 2021-and-newer Suburban carries the same stated figure. Chevrolet lists the 2027 Suburban at 144.5 cu. ft. maximum.

Cubic feet do not prove that an item will fit

Cargo volume includes irregular space around trim and seats, so it cannot answer whether a rectangular appliance, dog crate or piece of furniture will pass through the liftgate. Measure the actual vehicle with the seats in the positions you intend to use:

1. Liftgate opening: width at the narrowest point and height below the raised door.
2. Floor width: both between the wheel housings and at the widest section.
3. Usable floor length: from the closed liftgate to the relevant seatback.
4. Interior height: at the lowest obstruction, not only at the roof’s center.
5. Seat-floor transition: slopes, gaps and protruding seat hardware.
6. Loading path: whether the object can rotate through the opening.

For example, published 2014 dimensions list about 101.8 in. behind the first row, 69.6 in. behind the second row and 35.6 in. behind the third row, with 49.1 in. between the wheel housings. Those measurements apply to that 2014 configuration, not to a current Suburban. (2014 Suburban specifications)

Cars.com described the 2006 Suburban as able to carry a 4-by-8-foot plywood sheet with its middle and rear seats removed. That does not establish sheet-goods fit in another generation or with the seats merely folded. (2006 model overview)

Check the load limit before filling the space

A Suburban can reach its allowable weight before using all its cargo volume, especially with passengers, tools, dense materials or trailer tongue weight aboard. The vehicle-specific Tire and Loading Information label is attached to the B-pillar. Start with its combined occupant-and-cargo limit, then subtract the driver, passengers and cargo already aboard.

Chevrolet’s Tahoe/Suburban owner’s manual also says load transferred from a trailer reduces available cargo capacity and that trailer tongue weight counts toward the vehicle’s gross weight.
