Which 2023 Chevy Silverado Fits Your Hauling Needs?

Dale Hutchins · 4 min read

Compare the 2023 Silverado 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD by engine, towing setup and cab-and-bed fit, with checks before buying used.

The 2023 Chevy Silverado pickup lineup includes the 1500, 2500HD and 3500HD. Start with the truck series, not the trim: an LT badge alone does not tell you its engine choices, bed dimensions or towing capability.

For U.S.-specification trucks, Chevrolet lists these maximum trailer ratings:

2023 model Maximum conventional towing Maximum with an in-bed hitch Where to start your comparison
Silverado 1500 13,300 lb Verify the separate gooseneck/fifth-wheel chart Daily driving, cargo hauling and trailers within the specific truck’s ratings
Silverado 2500HD 18,500 lb 18,510 lb, gooseneck/fifth-wheel Heavier trailers and loads that exceed a suitable 1500’s limits
Silverado 3500HD 20,000 lb 36,000 lb, gooseneck only High pin-weight trailers and maximum heavy-duty capability

These are configuration-specific ceilings, not ratings for every truck in the series. The 2500HD’s 18,510-lb rating applies to a diesel Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD with 17-inch wheels. The 3500HD’s 36,000-lb rating requires a diesel Regular Cab Long Bed WT 2WD with dual rear wheels and the available Max Trailering Package. It is not a bumper-pull or fifth-wheel rating. See Chevrolet’s 2023 trailering guide, pages 33–47 and 2023 HD brochure.

Engine choices: the two Duramax diesels are different

The 1500 offers four engines; the HD trucks use a separate pair of 6.6-liter V8s.

Series Engine Horsepower Torque Automatic transmission
1500 2.7L turbo high-output four-cylinder 310 hp 430 lb-ft 8-speed
1500 5.3L gasoline V8 355 hp 383 lb-ft 10-speed
1500 6.2L gasoline V8 420 hp 460 lb-ft 10-speed
1500 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six 305 hp 495 lb-ft 10-speed
2500HD / 3500HD 6.6L gasoline V8 401 hp 464 lb-ft 6-speed
2500HD / 3500HD 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 445 hp 910 lb-ft Allison 10-speed

Two details matter when comparing listings:

  • “Duramax” is not enough identification. The 1500’s 3.0L inline-six is not the HD’s 6.6L V8.
  • A 2023 HD gasoline truck has a six-speed automatic. Do not apply a later model year’s gas-engine transmission specification to it.

The 1500’s 13,300-lb conventional maximum is available with specified 3.0L diesel or 6.2L V8 configurations and the Max Trailering Package. Engine displacement alone does not establish that rating. Chevrolet gives the qualifying cab, drive and wheel combinations in the 1500 brochure’s trailering footnotes.

Cab and bed fit: HD trucks need more parking space

The 1500’s inside bed lengths at the floor are 69.9 inches for Short Bed, 79.4 inches for Standard Bed and 98.2 inches for Long Bed. An ordinary Crew Cab Short Bed is 231.9 inches long overall; Crew Cab Standard Bed stretches to 241.4 inches. Trail Boss and ZR2 dimensions differ. See the 2023 1500 dimension table.

The HD trucks have different bed dimensions and cab pairings:

2023 HD cab and bed Pickup availability Inside bed length at floor Overall truck length
Regular Cab Long Bed 2500HD / 3500HD 98.3 in 235.5 in
Double Cab Standard Bed 2500HD 82.3 in 240.4 in
Double Cab Long Bed 2500HD / 3500HD 98.3 in 256.5 in
Crew Cab Standard Bed 2500HD / 3500HD single rear wheel 82.3 in 250.0 in
Crew Cab Long Bed 2500HD / 3500HD 98.3 in 266.0 in

A Crew Cab Standard Bed HD is 18.1 inches longer than an ordinary 1500 Crew Cab Short Bed. Measure garage depth before moving up in series. A dual-rear-wheel 3500HD also needs more width: Chevrolet lists 96.8 inches, versus 81.9 inches for single-rear-wheel HD trucks. Check mirror clearance separately.

For cargo fit, a nominal 48-by-96-inch plywood sheet fits between the listed wheelhousings in either series, but only the Long Bed has enough floor length to contain it with the tailgate closed. Liners and accessories can reduce usable clearance. Use the Silverado bed-and-cab chart for comparisons beyond this year.

Before buying or towing with a used 2023 Silverado

Request photos of the door-jamb labels and the original equipment record. Match series, engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, wheels and trailering package to the correct guide row. Chevrolet’s Trailering Information Label provides the truck’s maximum trailer weight rating and gross combination weight rating; the certification label provides gross vehicle and axle ratings.

Check payload as well as trailer weight. Passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch weight consume carrying capacity. For a fifth-wheel or gooseneck, the loaded pin weight must fit within the truck’s remaining payload and rear-axle limit—even when total trailer weight is below the advertised tow rating. Chevrolet’s trailering basics explain those limits.

For a 6.2L 1500, check recall applicability and repair records. GM’s April 24, 2025 filing for recall 25V-274 includes certain 2021–2024 Silverado 1500s with the L87 6.2L V8. Manufacturing defects in connecting-rod or crankshaft components can cause engine failure and loss of propulsion. Other engines are not included in that recall. The filing specifies inspection and, as necessary, engine repair or replacement; vehicles passing inspection receive higher-viscosity oil and associated updates. See GM’s recall filing.

Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup before purchase. Its VIN results do not show recalls already repaired, so also obtain the dealer’s completion records. Once you have identified a 1500 rather than an HD truck, the 2023 Silverado 1500 specs and buying guide covers its trim and configuration choices in more detail.
