Match Your Silverado’s Engine, Cab and Bed to the Job

Dale Hutchins · 5 min read

Compare 2023 Silverado 1500 engines, bed lengths, cab dimensions and trim equipment, then verify towing ratings and the 6.2L recall before buying used.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is best chosen by cab, bed and verified trailering capacity—not trim badge alone. It offers four engines, three cab styles and three bed lengths: 69.9, 79.4 or 98.2 inches at the floor. Maximum conventional towing reaches 13,300 lb only in specific configurations. The separate 2,260-lb maximum payload belongs to a Regular Cab 2WD with the 2.7L turbo, not the trucks that achieve maximum towing. These are U.S.-market specifications from Chevrolet’s 2023 brochure.

Pick a cab-and-bed combination to check bed space, rear legroom and overall length.

Overall lengths apply to non-Trail Boss/non-ZR2 versions. This tool does not establish towing capacity.

Crew Cab Short Bed

Bed Floor Length69.9 in
Overall Length231.9 in
Cargo Volume62.9 cu ft
Rear Legroom43.4 in

Larger rear seating area, but the shortest bed. A nominal 4×8 sheet will not lie flat with the tailgate closed.

All beds: 50.6 in between wheelhousings, 71.4 in wall to wall and 22.4 in inside height. Check liners, accessories and actual parking clearance separately.

Four Engines, With Configuration-Specific Towing Limits

Engine Horsepower Torque Automatic
2.7L Turbo High-Output four-cylinder 310 hp 430 lb-ft 8-speed
5.3L EcoTec3 V8 355 hp 383 lb-ft 10-speed
6.2L EcoTec3 V8 420 hp 460 lb-ft 10-speed
Duramax 3.0L turbo-diesel inline-six 305 hp 495 lb-ft 10-speed

Engine output and transmission pairings are from Chevrolet’s brochure. The official 2023 Silverado 1500 trailering chart lists the following engine-specific maximum conventional towing ratings.

Engine Maximum Towing Example Qualifying Build
2.7L turbo 9,500 lb Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD
5.3L V8 11,300 lb Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD or Crew Cab Short Bed 2WD; Max Trailering Package, 18-inch wheels
6.2L V8 13,300 lb RST Double Cab Standard Bed 4x4; Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels
3.0L diesel 13,300 lb Double Cab Standard Bed 2WD or Crew Cab Short Bed 2WD; Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels

These qualifying builds appear in Chevrolet’s brochure ratings table. They are examples, not ratings for every truck with that engine.

A hitch alone does not establish the maximum rating. Chevrolet’s trailering chart lists a 6.2L Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4 at 9,200 lb in its lower-rated configuration, versus 13,200 lb with the specified RST, Max Trailering Package and 20-inch-wheel configuration. The 2023 ZR2 is rated at 8,800 lb, despite having the same 6.2L engine.

For a used truck, compare its Trailering Information Label and carrying-capacity label against your loaded trailer, passengers, cargo and tongue weight. Tongue weight adds to the truck’s load. The loaded combination must also stay within gross vehicle, rear-axle, gross combination and trailer-weight ratings. Weigh the loaded truck and trailer rather than budgeting from an engine’s advertised maximum. Source: Chevrolet’s 2023 trailering guide.

Cab And Bed Choices Change Cargo Space And Garage Fit

Chevrolet’s brochure rounds these measurements to one decimal place. Overall lengths in this table apply to non-Trail Boss/non-ZR2 versions.

Cab And Bed Bed Floor Length Cargo Volume Overall Length
Regular Cab Standard Bed 79.4 in 71.7 cu ft 210.9 in
Regular Cab Long Bed 98.2 in 89.1 cu ft 229.6 in
Double Cab Standard Bed 79.4 in 71.7 cu ft 231.9 in
Crew Cab Short Bed 69.9 in 62.9 cu ft 231.9 in
Crew Cab Standard Bed 79.4 in 71.7 cu ft 241.4 in

All three beds have 50.6 inches between the wheelhousings, 71.4 inches wall to wall and 22.4 inches of inside height. Crew Cab rear legroom measures 43.4 inches, compared with 35.2 inches in the Double Cab. Source: Chevrolet’s 2023 dimensions table.

Regular Cab Long Bed Fits A Nominal 4×8 Sheet

The Regular Cab Long Bed is the only pairing listed here with enough floor length for a nominal 4×8 sheet laid flat with the tailgate closed. The 48-inch sheet width also fits between the wheelhousings. Check liner thickness and secure the load; the published dimensions describe the bed, not every accessory fitted to it.

Double Cab Trades Rear Legroom For Bed Length

A Double Cab Standard Bed has more bed length than a Crew Cab Short Bed at the same listed 231.9-inch overall length. The trade-off is rear legroom: 35.2 inches rather than the Crew Cab’s 43.4 inches.

The Crew Cab Standard Bed combines the larger rear seating area with the 79.4-inch bed, adding 9.5 inches of overall length over the ordinary Crew Cab Short Bed. That is the combination to compare when both rear-seat room and bed length matter, provided it fits your parking space.

Trail Boss And ZR2 Need Separate Clearance Checks

Chevrolet lists the Crew Cab Short Bed Trail Boss at 232.9 inches long and 78.4 inches high, and the ZR2 at 232.8 inches long and 78.7 inches high. Those figures differ from the ordinary Crew Cab Short Bed dimensions. Measure mirrors, accessories and usable garage-door clearance separately. Source: Chevrolet brochure.

Trim Equipment Does Not Form A Towing Ladder

The nine trims serve different purposes. A higher-priced or more off-road-focused trim does not automatically tow more.

WT and Custom are the utility-focused choices. WT offers vinyl seating and rubberized flooring; Custom adds conveniences such as remote start and a power driver’s seat.

LT and RST both include the 13.4-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch driver display. LT uses chrome exterior details, while RST favors body-color trim.

Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss both have a 2-inch factory suspension lift and Z71 off-road equipment. LT Trail Boss adds the larger-screen interior.

LTZ and High Country are comfort-focused trims with leather seating. Super Cruise was available on High Country; it was not standard on every example.

ZR2 is the specialized off-road choice, with Multimatic DSSV dampers and front and rear electronic locking differentials. The Bison Edition adds AEV bumpers, skid plates and other protection.

These distinctions are documented in Chevrolet’s 2023 trim descriptions. Verify the window sticker or build record before shortlisting a used truck: engine, bed and optional-equipment availability vary by trim.

Used 6.2L Trucks Need A VIN-Specific Recall Check

Before buying, obtain service records and arrange an independent inspection. Test transmission operation, four-wheel-drive functions where equipped, cameras, infotainment and the tailgate. Photograph the payload and trailering labels rather than relying on the seller’s listing.

For a 6.2L truck, check recall 25V-274. GM’s April 24, 2025 filing includes certain 2021–2024 Silverado 1500s with the L87 engine. Connecting-rod or crankshaft manufacturing defects can cause engine damage and failure, potentially resulting in loss of propulsion. The recall does not cover every 2023 Silverado or trucks with other engines. Source: GM’s recall report filed with NHTSA.

Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and ask a Chevrolet dealer for the completed-repair history. NHTSA’s VIN results do not show recalls already repaired, so a clean lookup alone does not prove the truck was never affected.

For an affected 6.2L truck, obtain any revised oil-service instructions as well. GM’s recall filing specifies higher-viscosity oil, a new oil-fill cap and an owner’s-manual insert for engines that pass inspection. Ask the dealer which instructions apply to that VIN before using the truck’s original oil-service guidance.
