2024 Chevy Silverado 1500: Engines, Cab-and-Bed Choices and Used-Buying Checks

Compare 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 engines, bed lengths, cab choices and trim equipment, then verify towing labels and the 6.2L recall before buying.
The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 has four engine choices and three bed lengths: 69.92, 79.44 and 98.18 inches. Crew Cab models take the short or standard bed; Double Cab gets the standard bed; Regular Cab takes the standard or long bed. The lineup’s maximum conventional towing rating is 13,300 lb when properly equipped, not a rating shared by every truck. GM bed dimensions, Chevrolet’s 2024 trailering guide
This guide covers the U.S.-market, gas-and-diesel 1500. The 2024 Silverado 2500HD, 3500HD and Silverado EV have separate specifications and ratings.
Engines and transmissions
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque | Automatic transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged four-cylinder | 310 hp | 430 lb-ft | 8-speed |
| 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 | 355 hp | 383 lb-ft | 10-speed |
| 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 | 420 hp | 460 lb-ft | 10-speed |
| 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six | 305 hp | 495 lb-ft | 10-speed |
These are Chevrolet’s published 2024 outputs; engine availability depends on trim and configuration. Chevrolet’s 2024 Silverado fact sheet
The TurboMax produces more torque than the 5.3L V8, but torque alone does not establish towing capacity. Compare the truck’s actual trailering rating before choosing an engine for a trailer.
For operating costs, the owner’s manual recommends 87-octane regular gasoline for the 2.7L and 5.3L. It recommends 91-octane or higher premium for the 6.2L; 87 may be used if premium is unavailable, with reduced performance and driveability. 2024 owner’s manual, page 304
What changed for 2024?
The 2.7L high-output engine gained the TurboMax name, and the 3.0L Duramax became available in the ZR2. Other changes included an active dual exhaust with Sport mode for the 6.2L, standard adaptive cruise control on High Country, and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability on WT. Cab and bed choices
| Bed | Inside length at floor | Available cab styles |
|---|---|---|
| Short | 69.92 in | Crew Cab |
| Standard | 79.44 in | Regular Cab, Double Cab, Crew Cab |
| Long | 98.18 in | Regular Cab |
Lengths come from GM’s pickup-box drawing; cab pairings appear in Chevrolet’s 2024 trailering tables. These are cargo-floor lengths, not overall truck lengths or measurements along the bed rails. GM pickup-box drawing, page 24, 2024 cab-and-bed configurations
The standard bed adds 9.52 inches of floor length over the short bed. The long bed is the only option with more than 96 inches of floor length with the tailgate closed, making it the starting point for hauling 8-foot material without lowering the tailgate. Still check load width, liner clearance and securement—not just nominal length.
For passengers, Regular Cab seats three. Double and Crew Cabs can seat five or six depending on the front-seat layout. Crew Cab has 43.4 inches of rear legroom, versus 35.2 inches in Double Cab, so it deserves the first look when adults regularly ride in back. Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 review, 2024 cab-specific interior dimensions
For comparisons with other model years, use the Silverado bed-and-cab chart. For garage fit, measure the candidate truck bumper to bumper and across its mirrors; bed length alone cannot settle parking clearance.
Which trims deserve a look?
The nine trims are WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country and ZR2. They are not simply nine steps toward greater hauling capacity. Chevrolet trim list
- WT and Custom: Start here if utility and purchase cost matter more than the upgraded dashboard. These use a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. Interior overview
- LT and RST: Worth comparing when you want the larger-screen interior. Chevrolet makes the 13.4-inch touchscreen standard on LT and above. Chevrolet infotainment specifications
- LTZ and High Country: Consider these for leather-trimmed comfort and additional equipment, but compare each truck’s option list rather than relying on its badge. 2024 upholstery by trim
- Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss: Put these on the shortlist if you want an off-road-oriented model, then check their towing and payload labels against your needs.
- ZR2: Its distinguishing hardware includes Multimatic DSSV dampers and front and rear electronic locking differentials—not the lineup’s highest tow rating. ZR2 hardware and ratings
Towing: read the labels before choosing the truck
One configuration Chevrolet lists at 13,300 lb of conventional towing is a 3.0L Duramax Crew Cab short bed, 2WD, with the Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels. By contrast, the ZR2’s conventional rating is 8,700 lb with the diesel or 8,800 lb with the 6.2L V8. Gooseneck and fifth-wheel ratings are separate. 2024 trailering guide, pages 27–30
Before committing to a tow vehicle:
- Read its Trailering Information Label for trailer-weight, tongue-load and gross combination limits.
- Read its Tire and Loading Information label for the combined occupant-and-cargo allowance, and its Certification/Tire label for gross vehicle and axle weight ratings.
- Account for passengers, bed cargo, added accessories and trailer tongue weight. Weigh the loaded combination to verify that vehicle, axle and combination weights remain within their ratings. Chevrolet trailering limits, owner’s manual, pages 210–212
For example, an 8,000-lb loaded trailer at 12% tongue weight places 960 lb on the truck before accounting for people, hitch equipment or cargo. A trailer can be below the tow rating while the truck is already short of payload.
Before buying a used 2024 Silverado
Check the 6.2L recall by VIN. Recall 25V274, issued in 2025, includes certain 2021–2024 Silverado 1500s with the L87 6.2L V8. GM identified connecting-rod and/or crankshaft manufacturing defects that can cause engine failure and loss of propulsion. Other engines and vehicles outside the suspect manufacturing window are excluded from this campaign. GM’s NHTSA recall filing
Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup and ask for completed-repair documentation. The lookup does not display recalls already repaired. For an affected 6.2L truck, retain its VIN-specific remedy paperwork and any updated oil instructions; do not assume every recalled truck received the same repair. GM’s remedy calls for inspection and repair or engine replacement as necessary; trucks that pass inspection receive higher-viscosity oil and related updates. GM remedy details
Also request service records and an independent inspection. Have the inspector assess cold-start behavior, transmission shifts, leaks, tires, brakes, suspension modifications and evidence of collision or hauling damage. Finally, photograph the loading and trailering labels before purchase: those figures matter more to your hauling decision than a dealer listing’s generic “maximum capacity.”
