2018 Silverado Gasoline Oil Type by Engine

Check 2018 Silverado gasoline-engine oil type and capacity: 0W-20 for the 5.3L/6.2L or 5W-30 for the 4.3L/6.0L, with dexos1 approval.
The 2018 Silverado 5.3L and 6.2L gasoline V8s use SAE 0W-20 full-synthetic engine oil meeting GM’s dexos1 specification. The 4.3L V6 and 6.0L gasoline V8 use SAE 5W-30 full-synthetic dexos1 oil. There is no single oil type for every 2018 Silverado. Chevrolet’s 2018 owner’s manual, page 345 specifies the grade by engine.

This chart does not apply to the 6.6L Duramax diesel. Chevrolet directs diesel owners to the separate Duramax supplement for oil requirements. For engine identification and related specifications, see our 6.6L Duramax guide. Owners of a 5.3L eAssist truck should also consult their Silverado/Sierra eAssist supplement, as directed by the main manual.
What to look for on the bottle
Match both the SAE viscosity and GM approval. A bottle marked “full synthetic” alone does not establish that it meets dexos1. Chevrolet says approved oils carry the dexos1-approved logo.
As of October 2026, a dexos1 Gen 3–licensed oil in the correct viscosity is suitable for these gasoline engines. GM states that Gen 3 is backward-compatible with earlier dexos1 requirements; its licensed-oil directory lets you check the exact product and grade. You do not need to select ACDelco solely because it is GM’s brand.
Can you use 5W-30 instead of 0W-20?
Not as the manual’s specified choice for the 5.3L or 6.2L. Chevrolet lists 0W-20 for those engines and provides no alternate viscosity in this section.
The stated cold-weather exception applies only to the 4.3L and 6.0L: where temperatures fall below −20°F (−29°C), SAE 0W-30 may be used for easier cold starting. The oil should still meet the correct specification. Chevrolet also advises against adding oil additives or using engine-oil flushes. Owner’s manual, pages 345–346.
