2026 Silverado 2500HD Configuration Guide

Dale Hutchins · 4 min read

Compare 2026 Silverado 2500HD gas and diesel engines, five cab-and-bed combinations, and six trims before checking towing and payload limits.

The 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD offers two 6.6-liter V8 engines, both paired with an Allison-branded 10-speed automatic, and five cab-and-bed combinations. Chevrolet lists the standard bed at 82.25 inches long and the long bed at 98.27 inches. Choose the passenger and cargo layout first, then verify that the specific truck has enough payload and trailering capacity for your load. See Chevrolet’s powertrain specifications and 2026 configuration selector.

The specifications below apply to U.S.-market 2026 models, checked October 5, 2026—not every truck advertised simply as “Silverado HD.”

Gas or Duramax diesel?

2026 engine Horsepower Torque Transmission
6.6L gasoline V8 401 hp 464 lb-ft 10-speed automatic
Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8 470 hp 975 lb-ft 10-speed automatic

Both engines are listed in Chevrolet’s 2026 Silverado HD specifications.

Start with the gas engine if its truck-specific ratings comfortably cover your work. The diesel provides substantially more torque and access to higher trailering ratings in certain configurations, but choosing Duramax does not automatically give you the highest-rated 2500HD. Cab, bed, drive type, wheel size, GVWR and trailering package still matter.

For example, Chevrolet lists these Crew Cab Standard Bed 4x4 configurations:

Engine and setup Wheel size GVWR Maximum conventional towing
6.6L gas 18, 20 or 22 in 10,850 lb 16,000 lb
6.6L Duramax 18, 20 or 22 in 11,350 lb 18,500 lb
6.6L Duramax with Max Trailering Package 18 or 20 in 11,750 lb 20,000 lb

These are configuration-specific comparison ratings, not permissions to tow that weight with any truck. Source: 2026 Chevrolet Trailering Guide, page 34.

There is no short-bed option in this lineup. The long bed adds 16.02 inches of cargo length over the standard bed. Choose it when that extra bed length matters more than parking convenience. Before buying either version, measure the actual truck’s overall length, height and mirror width against your garage—not just its bed.

For cargo-fit comparisons with the light-duty truck, use our Silverado bed dimensions guide. “Standard bed” is not a universal measurement across Silverado series.

Which trim fits the job?

The 2026 lineup has six trims with different priorities:

  • WT: Utility-focused equipment, including a Trailering Package, vertical trailering mirrors and an automatic locking rear differential.
  • Custom: Cloth seating and 20-inch wheels; available with Double Cab or Crew Cab.
  • LT: A useful starting point if you want the 13.4-inch diagonal touchscreen and 12.3-inch diagonal Driver Information Center.
  • LTZ: Leather-appointed front seating and power-folding, power-extending trailering mirrors.
  • ZR2: Off-road hardware, including Multimatic DSSV dampers, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, a rear electronic locking differential and a 1.5-inch lift.
  • High Country: Premium interior equipment, heated front and second-row outboard seats, Bed View Camera and HD Surround Vision.

These highlights come from Chevrolet’s 2026 trim comparison. Trail Boss is a package available on LT and LTZ for 2026, not a seventh standalone HD trim.

Check payload before committing to a trailer

A trailer can fall below the truck’s towing rating and still put too much weight on the truck. Passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and trailer tongue or pin weight all compete for its available load capacity.

Before purchasing, obtain photos of the truck’s load-capacity, certification and Trailering Information labels. Check the trailer weight rating, GVWR (maximum loaded truck weight), axle ratings, GCWR (maximum loaded truck-and-trailer weight) and applicable tongue or pin-load limits against your fully loaded combination. Also verify the hitch hardware’s ratings. Chevrolet specifically warns that fifth-wheel pin loads require close attention to payload and rear axle capacity, and recommends weighing the loaded combination, including individual axle weights, to verify its limits. See the 2026 Chevrolet Trailering Guide, pages 5–8.

Use our 2026 Silverado 2500HD towing guide for the configuration breakdown. If the loaded trailer’s pin weight leaves insufficient capacity for people and equipment, compare a suitably configured 3500HD rather than relying on the diesel engine’s output alone.

Chevrolet has also announced different 2027 powertrains—an available 8.3L Duramax diesel and an enhanced 6.6L gas V8—so the 2026 engine specifications above should not be carried into a 2027 purchase.
