Find Your Equinox Width Before Checking Garage Clearance

Compare Chevy Equinox body widths by generation, see the 2026 EV’s folded and extended mirror dimensions, and calculate clearance for your garage opening.
The 2025–2027 gas-powered Chevy Equinox is 74.9 inches wide without mirrors—about 6 feet 3 inches. Chevrolet lists that dimension for the 2025 redesign and explicitly labels it “without mirrors” for the 2026 and 2027 models. Earlier gas Equinox generations have narrower published body widths. For garage fit, however, use the vehicle’s actual width with its mirrors in the position you will use—not the body specification alone.
The 2026 Equinox EV has a documented width of 84.9 inches with mirrors extended and 76.9 inches with mirrors folded. Those are EV measurements, not substitute figures for the gas Equinox. The sources here do not establish a mirrors-extended width for the gas models.
Choose the mirror position, enter your measured opening, and use an actual vehicle measurement for a gas Equinox.

96 inches is an example opening. Replace it with your narrowest measured passage.
84.9 inches is the documented 2026 EV extended-mirror width. You can replace it with a direct measurement.
~5.6 inches per side
A 96-inch opening minus an 84.9-inch vehicle leaves 11.1 inches total.
Straight, centered geometry only—not a safe-fit approval. Angled entry and parked door access require separate checks.
Reference Widths And Calculation Limits
| Vehicle | Position | Width |
|---|---|---|
| 2025–2027 gas | Without mirrors | 74.9 in. |
| Gas Equinox | Extended mirrors | — |
| 2026 EV | Extended mirrors | 84.9 in. |
| 2026 EV | Folded mirrors | 76.9 in. |
Gas extended-mirror width is unknown in the cited sources. Do not enter body width as mirror width. Clearance per side = (opening − vehicle width) ÷ 2. Zero clearance leaves no spare width; a narrower opening does not fit straight through.

Gas Equinox Body Width Runs From 71.4 To 74.9 Inches
These are U.S. model-year groupings for the non-EV Equinox. Every width in the table excludes mirrors. The linked specifications document representative model years; they are not separate measurements of every vehicle within a generation.
| Gas Equinox Generation | Model Years | Body Width | Change From Prior |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 2005–2009 | 71.4 in. | — |
| Second | 2010–2017 | 72.5 in. | +1.1 in. |
| Third | 2018–2024 | 72.6 in. | +0.1 in. |
| Fourth | 2025–2027 | 74.9 in. | +2.3 in. |
The first generation has the narrowest body in this comparison. The second and third generations are nearly the same width: their published figures differ by only 0.1 inch. That small body-width difference is not evidence that their mirror-tip widths or door-opening clearance are identical.
The third generation’s 2024 specifications also list 72.6 inches without mirrors, matching the 2018 brochure figure. The 2025 redesign increases the published body width to 74.9 inches.
If you replace a 2018–2024 Equinox with a 2025–2027 gas model, the body-width difference is 2.3 inches. Centered in the same space, the newer model leaves 1.15 inches less body clearance per side. That is a useful comparison for a narrow parking bay, but it does not establish how much clearance you lose at the mirrors.
Keep the distinction when comparing vehicles at a dealership. A body-width chart can show which Equinox generation is wider. It cannot, by itself, tell you whether either vehicle will clear the same garage jambs with its mirrors extended.
Body Width Is Not Folded-Mirror Width
There are three different dimensions to keep separate: width without mirrors, width with mirrors folded, and width with mirrors extended. A specification using one label should not be read as another.
Without mirrors describes the published body measurement. It does not mean the mirrors have been folded against the vehicle. A folded mirror housing may still determine the overall width, so the gas Equinox’s 74.9-inch body specification must not be relabeled “mirrors folded.”
Mirrors folded describes the vehicle with the housings in their folded positions. For a garage check, measure the widest remaining points in that configuration. Do not assume the body becomes the widest part simply because the mirrors are no longer extended.
Mirrors extended is the relevant measurement when you intend to drive through an opening with both housings in their normal driving positions. Measure straight across the outermost mirror tips, rather than along the body or between points on the mirror glass.
Mirror adjustment and mirror folding are also different features. Power-adjustable glass does not, by itself, mean the housings power-fold. The cited 2017 Equinox LS specifications list power adjustment with manual folding. That example applies to that model and trim; it does not establish the folding equipment on every Equinox.
For a gas model, this draft’s sources provide body dimensions but no documented extended-mirror span. Adding an assumed mirror allowance to 74.9 inches would create an unsupported figure. A direct measurement of the exact vehicle is the better basis for a close garage decision.
The 2026 Equinox EV Has Separate Mirror Dimensions
GM’s 2026 Equinox EV specification guide lists the following dimensions:
| 2026 Equinox EV Position | Width | Approximate Feet And Inches |
|---|---|---|
| Mirrors extended | 84.9 in. | 7 ft. 1 in. |
| Mirrors folded | 76.9 in. | 6 ft. 5 in. |
The documented difference between those positions is 8.0 inches overall. In a centered clearance calculation, folding the mirrors therefore adds 4.0 inches of geometric clearance on each side compared with leaving them extended.
That comparison is specific to the 2026 Equinox EV dimensions in the guide. It is not a measurement of the gas Equinox, and it does not establish a figure for another EV model year. The shared Equinox name is not a reason to transfer dimensions between the gas vehicle and the EV.
For a narrow opening, the EV’s folded measurement can help evaluate a planned folded-mirror entry. It does not answer whether the driver can reach or operate the folding mechanism at the point where folding is needed. Check that operation on the vehicle you intend to use.
Use the inch figures for calculations. The feet-and-inches descriptions are rounded for readability; subtracting rounded dimensions can distort a small remaining gap. The calculator uses 84.9 and 76.9 inches, not their approximate feet-and-inches equivalents.
Centered Garage Clearance Is Half The Remaining Width
The calculation is: centered clearance per side equals the clear opening minus the vehicle width, divided by two, with both measurements in inches.
“Clear opening” means the usable space between the closest obstructions. It is not necessarily the nominal size of the garage door. Jambs, trim or other projections can make the actual passage narrower than the size used to describe the door.
For the documented 2026 Equinox EV width of 84.9 inches with mirrors extended, a measured 96-inch opening leaves 11.1 inches of total spare width. Split equally, that is 5.55 inches per side, or approximately 5.6 inches per side.
A measured 108-inch opening leaves 23.1 inches of total spare width with the same vehicle configuration. Centered clearance is approximately 11.6 inches per side.
| Measured Opening | EV Mirror Position | Vehicle Width | Gap Per Side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 96 in. | Extended | 84.9 in. | ~5.6 in. |
| 108 in. | Extended | 84.9 in. | ~11.6 in. |
These openings are calculation examples, not measurements of your garage. The results are geometric gaps, not recommended safety margins. The sources here do not provide a minimum safe per-side clearance, so the calculator does not label a positive gap as a guaranteed safe fit.
If opening width equals vehicle width, calculated clearance is zero. If the opening is narrower, the vehicle does not fit straight through in that configuration. A positive result means only that the stated vehicle width is smaller than the stated opening.
The equal split also assumes the vehicle is centered. Moving closer to one jamb reduces the available gap on that side even though the total spare width is unchanged. An angled approach or a turn through the opening needs additional room that this simple width calculation does not quantify.
Measure The Opening At Both Mirror And Body Height
Measure the narrowest clear distance through the opening at the heights occupied by the body and mirrors. A width taken at one convenient point is not enough if trim or another obstruction projects into the path elsewhere.
Use the actual passage with the garage door in the position used for entry. Record the clear distance between obstructions, not the outside dimensions of the door frame. If the opening has different restrictions at different heights, retain those measurements rather than averaging them.
Next, measure the Equinox on level ground with both mirrors extended. The needed dimension is a straight lateral span between the outermost tips. A tape following the contours of the vehicle does not measure the same thing.
If folded mirrors are part of the plan, repeat the measurement with both housings folded. Check which points are now widest. For the gas Equinox, this direct check supplies the folded-position dimension that the body-width figures do not provide.
For a conservative single-width calculation, compare the narrowest relevant opening with the widest relevant vehicle measurement. If that comparison is close, a stationary check at the actual obstruction is more useful than trying to extract certainty from a rounded specification.
Keep the measured configuration consistent with the calculator selection. Entering a body width while selecting a mirror-clearance calculation produces a numerical answer, but it answers the wrong fit question. For a gas Equinox, enter your measured extended- or folded-mirror overall width, depending on the intended entry position.
A Wider Replacement Can Reduce Parked Access Too
The garage opening and the parking space inside are separate checks. Clearing the jambs establishes only that the vehicle can pass through that particular opening under the conditions checked.
Inside the garage, the relevant space includes the walls, shelves and any adjacent vehicle. Measure where the Equinox will actually sit. A wider interior bay does not correct a narrow entrance, and an adequate entrance does not guarantee usable space beside the parked vehicle.
The fourth-generation gas Equinox’s extra 2.3 inches of body width compared with the third generation reduces centered body clearance by 1.15 inches on each side. If your current parking arrangement already leaves little room beside the driver’s door, that loss belongs in the replacement decision.
It still is not a door-opening specification. Published exterior width does not tell you how far the door can swing in your garage or how much room a person needs to enter and exit. Test the driver’s door with the vehicle in its intended parked position. Check rear-door access as well if those seats are used regularly.
Folding the mirrors can change the vehicle’s entry width, but it does not remove the need for door access once parked. Treat mirror clearance and occupant access as two separate results rather than one overall “fits” verdict.
Use The Exact Vehicle For A Close Fit
For comparing gas Equinox generations, use the published body widths: 71.4, 72.5, 72.6 and 74.9 inches. For passing through a garage opening, use a measured overall width in the intended mirror position. For the 2026 Equinox EV, the cited guide supplies 84.9 inches extended and 76.9 inches folded.
If the remaining gap is close, arrange a stationary clearance check with the exact vehicle before buying. Verify the narrowest opening, the intended mirror position and the parked door access separately. The specifications establish the starting dimensions; the actual vehicle and garage establish whether your particular arrangement works.
