The 5.7 Replaces the 5.3, While the 6.6 Replaces the 6.2
Chevrolet revealed the next-generation Silverado 1500 on July 23 with two naturally aspirated gasoline V8s. Current reporting maps the new 5.7L to the outgoing L84 5.3L and the new 6.6L to the outgoing L87 6.2L. The 5.7L is described as the new base or volume V8, leaving the 6.6L in the upper gasoline-engine position.
That replacement map explains where to start shopping. It does not predict the new engines’ output, fuel use or durability.

The outgoing 5.3L was reported at approximately 355 horsepower and 383–384 pound-feet of torque. The outgoing 6.2L was rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet. Those are historical reference points, not estimates for the new engines. An independent review records the outgoing ratings while noting that specifications for the new V8s were still missing.
Chevrolet says the new engines improve power, torque, capability and refinement. Until certified numbers appear, displacement cannot show how much either engine improves, where peak torque occurs or how the engines behave under sustained load.
A 6.6L badge alone does not establish cooling capacity, acceleration, payload or towing. A 5.7L badge does not prove that the engine is a revival of the historic Chevrolet 350 architecture. Compression, airflow, combustion strategy, calibration, emissions requirements and operating limits all affect the result.

Previews also support a 10-speed automatic, but that should not be read as confirmation of identical transmissions, ratios or calibrations for every engine and trim. The Car and Driver preview treats complete powertrain and performance specifications as forthcoming.
The redesigned truck has a seven-trim lineup, but the reviewed material does not provide a complete final order guide showing every engine, trim, cab, bed and package combination. The six familiar names used in the mapper—WT, Custom, LT, RST, LTZ and High Country—should therefore be treated as provisional same-name mappings rather than proof that every current build carries over unchanged.
Reported equipment changes include Z71 equipment becoming standard with four-wheel drive and a 16.3-inch screen entering the new lineup. It is not yet the confirmed towing winner. Tow ratings belong to complete configurations, not engine displacements. Cab style, bed length, drivetrain, axle ratio, cooling equipment, trailering package, curb weight, wheels, tires and trim equipment can all affect the published limit.
A heavily equipped 6.6L truck may have less available payload than a lighter 5.7L configuration. The truck carrying the lineup’s highest advertised tow rating may also be a cab, bed or trim the buyer does not want.
Do not attach the outgoing Silverado’s 13,300-pound maximum towing figure or 2,260-pound maximum payload figure to either new V8. Those were prior-model headline maximums tied to particular builds, not ratings for the redesigned truck.
Once Chevrolet releases the documentation, calculate remaining payload as truck-specific payload allowance minus every applicable payload deduction. The TurboMax and Duramax Could Be Better Fits

The TurboMax deserves comparison with the 5.7L for light-duty work, commuting and recreational towing. The necessary figures—price, payload, towing, fuel requirement and fuel economy—remain pending for the redesigned truck.
The Duramax deserves comparison with the 6.6L when annual mileage and towing frequency are high. Relevant differences will include highway range, loaded fuel consumption, acquisition cost, maintenance, payload and grade performance. Off-road buyers face an additional configuration question. Coverage of the Trail Boss and ZR2 does not establish that both V8s will be offered with every off-road package. The Yahoo Autos overview discusses the V8s with the off-road lineup while noting that full specifications, pricing and availability remained unreleased.
Tires, suspension hardware, skid plates, accessories and locking differentials can change curb weight, payload and gearing feel. An off-road 6.6L should be compared with an equivalently equipped 5.7L, not a lighter street-oriented truck.
Waiting Until September 18 Is the Safer Decision
Pricing and engine specifications are due September 18, according to reporting on the next Silverado information release. That makes waiting the sensible choice for anyone who wants a 2027 V8, needs to order a specific configuration or must verify towing capacity.
The redesigned Silverado is expected to reach the market near the end of 2026. Exact order-bank opening dates, engine-specific production schedules and dealer arrivals remain pending.
A discounted 2026 can still be the better purchase when three conditions are met: its published tow and payload ratings cover the job, the desired configuration is physically available, and the written discount is large enough to outweigh the new truck’s features for that buyer.
