What the Tahoe Z71 Includes—and What You Must Add
Compare the 2026 Chevy Tahoe Z71’s engines, tow ratings, standard 4WD hardware, dimensions, price, and key suspension and trailering options.
The 2026 Chevy Tahoe Z71 is a 4WD-only, three-row SUV with a $70,700 standard vehicle price before destination and options. A reviewed factory label adds a $2,795 destination charge. Standard equipment includes a 355-hp 5.3L V8, 10-speed automatic, two-speed transfer case, all-terrain tires, skid plates and a high-approach-angle front fascia (2026 Tahoe Z71 factory label).
A 6.2L V8 and 3.0L Duramax diesel are optional. Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, Magnetic Ride Control and an electronic limited-slip differential are also optional rather than standard on every Z71.

The Z71 Can Tow Up to 8,200 Pounds

Chevrolet offers all three engines on the Z71 and pairs each with a 10-speed automatic. The 5.3L is standard, the 6.2L has the most horsepower, and the diesel has the most torque (Chevrolet).
Do not apply Chevrolet’s advertised 8,400-lb. Tahoe maximum to a Z71. That rating is for a properly equipped 2WD Tahoe with the 5.3L V8. Because the Z71 is 4WD, its highest published rating is 8,200 lb. with the 5.3L V8 and Max Trailering Package.
Chevrolet’s 2026 Trailering Guide lists all six Z71 ratings above. It also limits a weight-carrying hitch to a 5,000-lb. trailer and 600-lb. tongue weight. Above 600 lb. of tongue weight, Chevrolet requires a weight-distributing hitch and sway control.

Z71 Hardware That Comes Standard
The equipment separating a Z71 from a regular 4WD Tahoe includes:

Chevrolet’s Z71 overview confirms the transfer case, skid plate, recovery hooks, assist steps and unique fascia (Chevrolet).
The reviewed factory label also lists leather-appointed heated front seats, tri-zone climate control, a 17.7-inch center display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, Adaptive Cruise Control and HD Surround Vision as standard equipment.
Air Ride, Magnetic Ride Control and eLSD Cost Extra
Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension is available, not standard. Chevrolet says it can lower the vehicle for easier entry and provide increased or maximum ground-clearance settings. On certain full-size SUVs, maximum clearance is available with 4LOW active (Chevrolet Support).
Magnetic Ride Control and an electronic limited-slip differential are optional as well. On one documented 2026 Z71, a $5,805 Z71 Off-Road Package included those two features, Air Ride, a power-sliding center console and rear-seat media.
That price and combination describe one VIN’s factory label, not every Z71. Check the factory label for the specific vehicle because package contents, availability and discounts can differ.
The Max Trailering Package is the critical option for reaching the higher ratings in the towing table. The same reviewed label lists an integrated trailer-brake controller, enhanced cooling radiator, Hitch View, smart-trailer integration and Blind Zone Steering Assist with Trailering as package equipment.
Match the Engine to the Job
The 5.3L Has the Highest Z71 Tow Rating
The standard 5.3L produces 355 hp and 383 lb.-ft. It is also the highest-rated Z71 engine for towing when paired with the Max Trailering Package, reaching 8,200 lb.
Without Max Trailering, its published rating falls to 7,700 lb. That 500-lb. difference makes the package more consequential than upgrading to a larger engine if maximum trailer rating is the priority.
The 6.2L Prioritizes Horsepower
The optional 6.2L produces 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. Its 8,100-lb. maximum is 100 lb. below the 5.3L Z71 maximum. Without Max Trailering, it is rated at 7,600 lb.
The 6.2L therefore supplies the most horsepower but does not produce the highest published trailer rating in this trim.
The Duramax Provides the Most Torque
The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel produces 305 hp and 495 lb.-ft., the most torque of the three engines. Its published Z71 ratings are 7,900 lb. without Max Trailering and 8,000 lb. with it.
Its maximum is 200 lb. below the 5.3L Z71 maximum. Buyers considering it for fuel consumption can compare the engine-specific figures in the linked Tahoe MPG table rather than assuming the diesel’s torque produces the highest tow rating.
Air Ride and eLSD Must Be Verified
Seek an Air Ride and electronic limited-slip differential configuration if adjustable ride height or the electronic differential matters. Neither feature should be assumed from the Z71 badge, off-road fascia or recovery hooks alone.
The VIN-Specific Label Sets the Usable Limit
Before towing, check the Trailering Information Label on the driver-side doorframe. Chevrolet notes that its published maximum trailer rating assumes only a 150-lb. driver and 150-lb. front passenger. Additional passengers, equipment and cargo reduce the available rating.
The VIN-specific label, GVWR, rear-axle rating and actual loaded weights—not the trim badge alone—set the usable limit. Confirm that the vehicle has Max Trailering before relying on the higher table value, then account for occupants, cargo, accessories and trailer tongue weight.
