2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Engines, Cab-and-Bed Choices and Used-Buying Checks

Compare 2021 Silverado 1500 engines, cab and bed sizes, trims and towing limits, plus the 6.2L recall and checks before buying used.
The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers three cab styles, three bed lengths and eight trims. Its maximum conventional towing rating is 13,300 lb, but that figure requires a 6.2L Double Cab Standard Bed RST 4x4 with the Max Trailering Package and 20-inch wheels—not every Silverado with a V8. Chevrolet’s maximum advertised payload is 2,280 lb, on a different configuration: the 2.7L Turbo Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD. Payload covers passengers and cargo, not just material in the bed. For a used purchase, identify the cab, bed, engine code, transmission and trailering equipment before comparing capability. A listing that says only “5.3 V8” leaves important differences unresolved.
Cab and bed configurations
For the U.S. 2021 model year, the factory combinations are Regular Cab with Long Bed, Double Cab with Standard Bed, and Crew Cab with either Short or Standard Bed. Trim and powertrain availability vary within those combinations. Chevrolet model-availability tables
| Cab | Available bed | Inside length at floor | Cargo volume | Rear legroom |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab | Long | 98.18 in | 89.1 cu ft | No rear seat |
| Double Cab | Standard | 79.44 in | 71.7 cu ft | 35.2 in |
| Crew Cab | Short | 69.92 in | 62.9 cu ft | 43.4 in |
| Crew Cab | Standard | 79.44 in | 71.7 cu ft | 43.4 in |
Bed-floor dimensions come from Sunset Chevrolet’s 2021 dimension table; volume and legroom come from the Chevrolet brochure.
All three beds are listed at 71.40 in wide at the floor, 50.63 in between the wheel housings and 22.40 in deep. Based on those dimensions, a nominal 48-by-96-in plywood sheet fits between the wheel housings, but only the Long Bed has enough floor length to contain it with the tailgate closed. Liners and installed equipment can reduce usable clearance. Bed measurements
The Crew Cab provides 8.2 in more rear legroom than the Double Cab. Choose it for regular rear-seat use; choose the Double Cab when the Standard Bed matters more than rear-passenger space. A Crew Cab Standard Bed adds 9.52 in of cargo-floor length over the Short Bed, but check the actual truck’s bumper-to-bumper length, mirror clearance and height before committing to a garage space.
For comparisons with other years and duty classes, see our Silverado bed dimensions guide.
Engines and transmissions
Chevrolet counted six engine choices because the two 5.3L V8 versions use different fuel-management systems and transmission pairings.
| Engine and code | Horsepower | Torque | Automatic transmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 — LV3 | 285 hp | 305 lb-ft | 6-speed |
| 2.7L Turbo four-cylinder — L3B | 310 hp | 348 lb-ft | 8-speed |
| 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 — L82 | 355 hp | 383 lb-ft | 6-speed |
| 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 — L84 | 355 hp | 383 lb-ft | 8- or 10-speed, depending on configuration |
| 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 — L87 | 420 hp | 460 lb-ft | 10-speed |
| 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six — LM2 | 277 hp | 460 lb-ft | 10-speed |
Outputs and transmission pairings are documented in Chevrolet’s 2021 brochure. The 2021 2.7L’s 348 lb-ft figure should not be replaced with a later model year’s rating.
The L82 normally uses Active Fuel Management, while the L84 normally uses Dynamic Fuel Management. Those are the brochure specifications, but Chevrolet’s updated trailering chart identifies certain 2021 L84 trucks with YK9 as lacking Dynamic Fuel Management. Check the original window sticker or build record rather than assuming equipment from the model year alone. Chevrolet’s updated 2021 chart
For highway-focused use, Chevrolet quoted EPA estimates of 23 city/33 highway mpg for the 3.0L diesel 2WD and 22/26 mpg for diesel 4x4. Those are configuration-specific estimates, not towing economy figures. 2021 diesel specifications
Which trim fits the job?
The eight trims form several practical paths:
- WT and Custom: WT emphasizes utility, including vinyl seating and rubberized flooring. Custom adds body-color styling and, for 2021, standard trailering and convenience equipment.
- LT and RST: LT adds chrome styling, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. RST takes the body-color, sport-styled approach.
- Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss: Both include a factory 2-in suspension lift, Z71 equipment and a two-speed transfer case. LT Trail Boss adds more cabin convenience features.
- LTZ and High Country: These emphasize leather seating, comfort and technology. High Country adds distinctive styling and further premium equipment.
Chevrolet also introduced the optional six-function Multi-Flex Tailgate, available across all eight trims. Verify the individual truck’s options; trim names do not establish every camera or driver-assistance feature. 2021 trim and equipment descriptions
Towing: the configuration changes the answer
These examples show why engine size alone is insufficient:
| Configuration | Maximum conventional trailer rating |
|---|---|
| Double Cab Standard Bed RST 4x4, 6.2L, Max Trailering Package and 20-in wheels | 13,300 lb |
| Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4, 6.2L, Max Trailering Package | 11,900 lb |
| Crew Cab Short Bed 4x4, 6.2L, without Max Trailering Package; non-Trail Boss | 9,200 lb |
| Crew Cab Short Bed LT Trail Boss 4x4, 5.3L L84/10-speed | 9,300 lb |
| Crew Cab Short Bed 2WD, 3.0L diesel | 9,500 lb |

Before towing, read the specific truck’s Trailering Information Label, carrying-capacity label and certification label. Confirm trailer weight, tongue weight, hitch limits, gross combination weight and axle limits. Passengers, cargo and added equipment can reduce the trailer weight available; a trailer below the advertised tow rating can still overload the truck through tongue weight. Checks before buying used
Check the 6.2L recall by VIN. Recall 25V-274, filed in 2025, covers certain 2021–2024 Silverado 1500s with the L87 engine within the March 1, 2021–May 31, 2024 production window. Connecting-rod or crankshaft manufacturing defects can cause engine failure and loss of propulsion. Other engines are excluded from this recall. The remedy includes inspection and repair or replacement as necessary; vehicles passing inspection receive higher-viscosity oil and related updates. Obtain the repair record and applicable service instructions. GM’s recall filing
Review V8 lifter history separately. GM bulletin PIP5776G addresses collapsed lifters and bent pushrods on specified 2020–2021 Silverado 1500s with L84 or L87 engines in the September 1, 2020–March 31, 2021 build window. It identifies misfire codes P0300–P0308. This is diagnostic guidance, not proof that every truck in that window has failed, and it is separate from the crankshaft/connecting-rod recall. GM bulletin PIP5776G
For any candidate, arrange an independent inspection with a cold start, diagnostic scan and road test. Ask for engine and transmission repair invoices, check for leaks and underbody damage, and operate the tailgate and installed towing equipment.
Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup immediately before purchase. Its VIN results show unrepaired recalls, not recalls already completed—so a clean result does not replace the truck’s repair history.
