Check the Wheel Recall Before Your Next Tow

Dale Hutchins · 9 min read

Campaign 26V496000 covers cracked steel wheels, not towing overload. Check your Silverado EV VIN, separate the battery recall, and book the free fix.

The 952-truck Silverado EV and Sierra EV wheel recall traces possible cracking to a manufacturing defect around steel-wheel disc vent holes—not towing or overload stress. NHTSA campaign 26V496000 therefore does not reduce the truck’s published tow rating or show that towing caused the cracks, but it also does not clear an affected, uninspected truck for a towing trip. The safe next step is a VIN check and the free dealer inspection before towing season (NHTSA recall record).

Why Two Same-Day Recalls Look Worse Than the Evidence Shows

The concern behind the broader reliability argument is understandable. GM filed two Silverado EV safety campaigns on July 30, 2026: the steel-wheel campaign 26V496000 and high-voltage-battery campaign 26V494000. A wheel disc that can separate raises an obvious loss-of-control risk, while an improperly secured battery module is not a trivial defect.

Owners are also right that a truck with an unresolved safety recall deserves more scrutiny before heavy use. Normal hitch setup, payload calculations and a published maximum tow rating cannot compensate for a component that may be defective.

Where the general-reliability argument goes beyond the evidence is causation. The wheel campaign identifies a manufacturing defect at the disc vent holes. It does not identify trailer weight, tongue weight, payload, GVWR or operation near the rated towing limit as the cause. The remedy is to identify and inspect the relevant wheels and replace them as necessary, not to derate the truck or install a towing-specific component (NHTSA recall record).

The battery campaign is separate. Campaign 26V494000 concerns an improperly secured high-voltage battery module, with dealer replacement at no charge. Completing that repair does not complete the wheel inspection, and completing the wheel recall does not close the battery campaign.

Check Both Campaigns Before Scheduling Service

A browser tool cannot determine recall eligibility from the VIN characters alone because the affected-VIN list and campaign status must come from NHTSA or GM. The checker below keeps the VIN in your browser, helps you record the two official results and distinguishes the road-wheel, spare-wheel and battery remedies.

Enter your truck details and the results from the official VIN lookups; the decision and dealer request update below.

Silverado EV Two-Recall Checker

Record the official VIN results for campaigns 26V496000 and 26V494000. The VIN stays in this browser; this tool makes no network request.

Default example: a 2026 Work Truck with RT3 steel road wheels, an SG8 spare and both campaigns shown open. Result: both recalls apply, but only the wheel campaign controls the wheel-inspection decision before towing.

No VIN entered. Eligibility still requires an official NHTSA or GM lookup.

VIN characters alone cannot reveal campaign eligibility; paste the official results into the selectors below.

Campaign 26V496000 is open and towing is planned. The documented wheel issue is a manufacturing defect, not a tow-rating reduction, but an uninspected truck has no VIN-specific recall clearance.

Dealer work: inspect the relevant RT3 road wheels and SG8 spare and replace suspect wheels as necessary; separately replace the improperly secured battery module. Both remedies are free.

Configuration Signal

This configuration has the strongest reported wheel-recall relevance: a Work Truck may have implicated RT3 road wheels, an SG8 spare or both. The official VIN result remains controlling.

Sources: supplied NHTSA campaign records for 26V496000 and 26V494000; reported wheel details include a 952-truck combined population, RT3 road wheels, SG8 spares and free inspection/replacement. Eligibility must be confirmed through NHTSA, GM or a Chevrolet dealer.

Use the official GM recall lookup and NHTSA’s VIN search for the authoritative result. A newly announced campaign may take time to appear in every system, so save conflicting results and ask the dealer to reconcile them rather than assuming one is correct.

Campaign 26V496000 Covers Certain 2026 Steel Wheels

NHTSA campaign 26V496000, also listed under GM identifier N262556920, covers certain 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trucks. The reported combined population is 952 trucks. Third-party summaries divide that figure into 513 Silverado EVs and 439 Sierra EVs; it is not a Silverado-only count.

Item Campaign Detail
Federal campaign 26V496000
GM identifier N262556920
Model year 2026
Combined population 952 trucks
Reported model split 513 Chevrolet; 439 GMC
Defect Steel wheels may crack at disc vent holes
Consequence Disc separation, reduced control and crash risk
Remedy Inspect and replace as necessary, free

The campaign was reported July 30, 2026, and affected VINs were scheduled to become searchable through NHTSA that day. Owner-notification letters were scheduled to begin mailing September 14, 2026. Those dates do not establish when an individual owner received notice. The population split and mailing schedule come from a summary of the federal filing.

The campaign does not cover every Silverado EV, trim or wheel design. Secondary campaign reporting identifies RT3 18-inch steel road wheels on certain Work Truck models and SG8 18-inch steel spare wheels on certain Work Truck and LT configurations. Trail Boss and RST configurations reportedly use inflator kits instead of the implicated spare and were reported as excluded (GM Authority campaign summary).

Silverado EV Reported Possible Relevance
Work Truck RT3 road wheels, SG8 spare or both
LT SG8 spare may require review
Trail Boss Reported excluded
RST Reported excluded

Affected Silverado EV production was reported as running from November 25, 2025, through March 13, 2026. That window can identify a truck worth checking, but it is not an eligibility test. A truck inside the window may not have an affected VIN or suspect wheel lot, while transferred or separately purchased wheels complicate a VIN-only assessment (GM-Trucks campaign account).

The Crack Origin Is a Manufacturing Issue, Not a Tow-Rating Finding

A steel wheel has a center disc connecting the hub area to the rim. Openings in that disc are commonly called vent holes. The reported flaw can produce hairline cracking around those openings.

GM-Trucks reports that the suspected problem involved supplier Topy America’s vent-hole-forming process and that hairline cracks were found during fatigue testing. GM reportedly estimated that 74% of the recalled population contained the defect and knew of no associated field complaints or incidents at that time (GM-Trucks campaign account).

That 74% estimate cannot determine whether one truck’s wheel is defective. Nor does an absence of vibration, wobble, noise, pressure loss, steering changes or visible cracking clear a wheel. The available campaign information does not establish dependable warning signs before failure.

The documented progression is that a crack may propagate, the wheel disc may separate, vehicle control may be reduced and crash risk may increase. This is why the manufacturing origin does not make the recall harmless. It establishes what caused the campaign; it does not establish that an affected wheel can remain in service until convenient.

An implicated road wheel is already supporting the truck whenever it moves. An implicated spare is not loaded while stored, but it becomes safety-critical once installed. Calling this only a spare-wheel recall is therefore inaccurate for Work Trucks that may have RT3 steel road wheels.

The Recall Neither Bans Towing Nor Approves It

The cited NHTSA record carries no special stop-towing order, reduced tow rating, payload reduction, speed restriction, “park it” instruction or towing-specific repair. It also contains no finding that towing initiates or accelerates the cracking.

That scopes the conclusion narrowly. Campaign 26V496000 says nothing adverse about towing at the truck’s rated capacity once the recall status and ordinary configuration limits are resolved. It does not say that every affected, uninspected truck is safe to tow before the wheel inspection.

The Record Establishes It Does Not Establish
Cracks may form at disc vent holes Towing caused the cracks
Disc separation may reduce control Tongue weight accelerates cracking
Dealers inspect relevant wheels An uninspected truck is cleared
Suspect wheels are replaced free A reduced tow rating is required

A maximum tow rating answers whether a particular truck-and-trailer combination remains within specified operating limits. A safety recall asks whether a component may fail to perform as intended. A trailer can be below the truck’s stated limit while the unresolved wheel question remains.

For example, Edmunds reports that a properly equipped 2026 Silverado EV LT can tow up to 12,500 pounds. That is a configuration-specific maximum, not a recall clearance for an individual vehicle (Edmunds 2026 Silverado EV overview). It should not be transferred to a Work Truck, another equipment package or a truck whose wheel campaign remains unresolved.

The same distinction applies when towing well below the labeled maximum. Staying within ordinary payload, axle, tire, hitch, GVWR and GCWR limits is required, but it does not prove that a recalled wheel will pass inspection.

Give the Dealer Both Recall Numbers

Locate the complete 17-character VIN and run it through both official systems. Look specifically for wheel campaign 26V496000 and battery campaign 26V494000 rather than asking whether the truck has “a recall.”

Save each result as a screenshot, printout or dated note. If NHTSA lists a campaign that GM does not—or the reverse—give both records to a Chevrolet Certified Service dealer and request reconciliation. GM says newly announced recalls can take several days, and rarely longer, to appear in its lookup.

Tell the service adviser whether the truck is a Work Truck, LT, Trail Boss or RST; whether it has steel road wheels; and whether it carries a steel spare. Mention RT3 road wheels or an SG8 spare if known, but do not rely on visual identification as the final decision.

For a planned towing trip, use a precise request:

“My 2026 Silverado EV is listed—or may be listed—under NHTSA campaign 26V496000 and GM recall N262556920. I plan to tow on [date]. Are there current GM campaign instructions or VIN-specific operating restrictions before the wheel inspection? Please document the guidance in my appointment record, email or repair order.”

Provide the expected loaded trailer weight and tongue weight if requested. Keep the ordinary rating question separate from the recall question: first confirm that the combination complies with the truck’s vehicle-specific labels and documentation, then ask what Chevrolet advises while this VIN’s campaign remains open.

If the dealer cannot answer, ask it to review current campaign material or elevate the request through Chevrolet’s campaign-support channels. Chevrolet Customer Assistance is listed at 1-800-222-1020. Have the VIN, dealer name, campaign numbers and planned towing date available.

The Free Remedy May Cover Road Wheels, the Spare or Both

The stated wheel remedy is inspection followed by replacement as necessary at no charge. Recall inclusion does not mean every wheel will be replaced.

Third-party campaign summaries describe a production-focused inspection in which the dealer checks wheel production or lot information and replaces wheels from suspect lots. Depending on the configuration, the dealer may need to inspect all four road wheels, the spare or all five. Lot markings may not be reliably assessed from an owner’s exterior inspection.

The battery campaign has a different remedy. Dealers replace the improperly secured high-voltage battery module free of charge. The two campaigns may be handled during the same service visit if parts, staffing and campaign instructions permit, but the supplied records provide no repair-duration or parts-availability figures.

Separately purchased wheels require additional attention. GM Authority reports that wheel part numbers 85162242 and 85535663 were sold over the counter and that dealers were instructed to identify customers who bought potentially affected wheels. A matching part number does not by itself prove that a wheel is defective; production information still may require dealer verification.

Give the dealer the part number, visible lot markings, purchase invoice, seller, current vehicle VIN and original associated VIN if known. State whether the wheel is installed, carried as a spare or stored separately. The supplied information does not establish loaner availability, reimbursement, roadside assistance or expedited service, so those arrangements must be confirmed directly.

Complete the Inspection Before Treating the Recall as Resolved

The wheel campaign’s manufacturing origin defeats the claim that Silverado EV towing loads caused the reported cracks. It does not defeat the recall’s safety consequence.

Check the VIN in both official systems, identify whether the road wheels, spare or both need review, and ask the dealer for written VIN-specific guidance before towing with an open campaign. Once inspected, any wheel from a suspect lot is replaced free of charge. Until then, neither a normal tow rating nor the absence of a special towing ban provides vehicle-specific recall clearance.
